MSI to Release X340 with Intel CULV Processors in April

Posted by Mike

MSI is improving its line of new laptops with the release new ultraportables.

The company initially revealed its MSI X320, which looks like a MacBook Air last month at CES. It’s a 13.4-inch laptop powered by 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530.

The news is its early successor, the new x340 which packs more power but consumes lesser electricity. The computer belongs to the Consumer Ultra Low Voltage (CULV) line of processors that could be the next big thing in mobile computing.

Andy Tung, MSI’s Director of U.S. Sales introduced the product to the press. “At launch you will see [the x340 with] two specs. They are both using Intel’s Consumer ULV CPUs. One is the CULV Intel Celeron M 725 and the second one will be the Core 2 Solo SU3500,” he said.

The price of these new computers isn’t clear as of this writing. According to Tung, x340 will be around $750. The x320 will be around $700.

If you’re unsure as to what you should get, Tung gave us a pointer. “To have the best battery life on this product the Z530 is the only choice, but the CULV platform will provide better performance,” he said.

They will be available in the US this April.

Samsung Unveils PL10 Multimedia Camera

Posted by Mike

Samsung is dead serious about the new PL10. Their 2-page press release about the product justifies that. Not that we are complaining, the dubbed multimedia camera is packed with features.

Samsung PL10 sports a 9 megapixel and has a 7 inch LCD screen and PMP (Personal Multimedia Player) with integrated MP3 player. Yes it is a camera and a music player in one. Perhaps Samsung wants us to listen to some cool sounds while taking pictures, or vice versa.

The camera features Face Recognition, Perfect Portrait System, Smart Auto and Frame guide which aren’t really surprising.

The MP3 function allows you to create slideshows with music, plug it into an external video device and you have a hell of a good visual show.

The Smart Auto Screen Recognition optimizes picture settings for ease of use. There are different modes including Portrait, Night portrait, Macro and Macro Colour.

Smart Album allows extended management of photos while Face Detection and Recognition, well are pretty self explanatory.

It will be available in camera stores this April in colors such as, royal black, arty red, candy pink and purple. The tag mark would be around £179.

Corel brings InstantON Feature to Sony’s VAIO P

Posted by Mike

Corel is bringing something that can perhaps make Sony VAIO P a real turn on (not that the unit is a turn off), the InstantON technology.

For those not familiar InstantO, it is a feature that is fast becoming a requirement in most netbooks. It allows fast surfing make Skype calls; chat on the IM client; listen to music and other usage that pretty much defined why you bought a netbook in the first place. And Sony clearly doesn’t want to be the last to adapt the technology.

VAIO P-series of netbooks are available in Vista OS only. And since Vista takes a little while to boot up users who will take quick notes or check the web for something will be able to appreciate this feature more.

VAIO P with the Corel InstantON will be initially released in Japan, other markets including US will follow soon.

Nokia 6710 Navigator and 6720 Classic Unveiled

Posted by Mike

Nokia unveiled two new phones with complete QWERTY keyboard – the new Nokia 6710 Navigator and 6720 Classic phones.

The 6710 Navigator is a slider phone while the 6720 is, classic. Both of these phones sport a GPS system that is clearly useable for users who want to explore the world. That pretty much explains the Navigator title too. And to support the claim that it is really the Navigator phone, it has real time drive-and-walk navigation, and full regional maps. If you want to take pictures while exploring, then the 5-MP built-in Carl Zeiss camera should be your answer to that.

The classic version 6720 is pretty much like the Navigator, with less than a bit of the style. It also has 5 megapixel camera and the high tech applications. It also got a 2.2-inch TFT QVGA, music player with support for MP3, AAC and WMA, FM tuner, and a dual-LED flash.

Both of the phones have 16GB microSD memory and 18.5 day standby time and 4.5 / 7.5 hour talk time for 3G and GSM, respectively.

Nokia 6720 will be released first for a tag of 245 euros, 6710 Navigator will follow for 300 euros. Expect the 6720 on second quarter of this year and 6710 Navigator months after.

The appearance of V12 Design’s dual LCD concept astonished many, but here’s what will even surprise you. The almost crazy dual screen mobile computer is apparently close to production.

Dubbed as the Canova, the laptop design in Italy features an LCD replacing traditional keyboard and trackpad. There are no information about the specs and innards of this new machine, heck their official site contains no more than flashy images of the design. But still that is more than enough to keep excited enthusiasts to gossip about the dual LCD laptop.

Estari, an American company will be bringing the laptop closer to your offices and home. There are rumors that its cost would be around $400, again this is still an unofficial announcement.

For more pictures and teasers, you can head on to their official website at estari.com

Could the Recession Delay XP’s Demise?

Posted by Ruel

As Microsoft is set to withdraw support for Windows XP, household and business users alike are starting to question the timing and propriety of the move.

Many companies are already reeling from the ongoing recession, and the last thing that they need is additional digits on their expenses sheet for OS replacement. Even sans the economic crunch, many deem a Vista shift would be needless and wasteful in view of the promising developments that Redmond is making on Windows 7.

At present, Microsoft is not blinking. If you’re still using XP and bent on sticking to it, then you have to do some serious thinking as to its feasibility. If you’re PC is like Cuba, then you’ll probably survive compatibility or support storms as you won’t be mixing much with other computers or data coming from them. But if you’re constantly interacting with PC users who have long migrated to Vista, then you really have to consider joining their club.
