To keep your computer running smoothly and in a timely fashion, it is important to keep your computer’s hard drive clean and tidy.  For optimal performance from your computer, follow these three easy steps for computer clean up:

Freeing Up Disk Space

By utilizing the Disk Cleanup tool, you can free up space on your hard disk.  By identifying files that can be safely deleted and then enabling you to choose which of those files to delete, the Disk Cleanup tool aids in improving the performance of your computer.

Disk Cleanup helps remove temporary internet files, empty the recycle bin, remove downloaded program files, remove temporary Windows files and unused optional Windows components, and remove installed programs you don’t use.

Disk Defragmentation

Because it slows the overall performance of your computer’s system, fragmentation of files on the hard disk is one of the key corrections in computer clean up.  To correct and help prevent disk fragmentation, the Disk Defragmenter utility should be used.  By consolidating fragmented files and folders and storing files contiguously, the Disk Defragmenter clears space and speeds up disk processing.

Checking For and Repairing Disk Errors

In tandem with the Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter utilities, the Error Checking (Check Disk or CHKDSK) utility can also be used to optimize computer performance.  During the life of your computer, hard drive use can trigger the development of bad sectors.  This slows down the performance of the hard disk and often makes data writing (file saving) difficult or impossible.

The Error Checking utility scans the hard drive and corrects bad sectors, file system errors, and misplaced folders.
