If your computer keeps rebooting, then it is likely that you’ll need to fix lsass.exe errors on your PC. Note: lsass.exe is not a virus itself, but a file that is exploited by the Sasser Worm.
The methods it uses to infect your computer are very technical, but luckily the methods to fix it are not. Take these steps to insure that your computer is clean of any worms and viruses.
Stop the Reboot Process
Because lsass likes to reboot your computer over and over, it can be quite difficult to repair. However, if you manage to get into windows (via safe mode or any other method), then you can stop the rebooting.
1) Go to Start > Run
2) Type “Shutdown -a”
This will stop your computer from rebooting. It is a temporary fix. The virus is still present.
You will not be able to reboot your computer from the Start bar, so you will have to switch it on and off manually.
Download the Most Recent Windows Security Patches
This may seem obvious, but it is also the most overlooked fix. Windows came out with a specific patch for the Sasser virus, so if that is your problem, then you’ll want to update your windows security.
Look specifically for the “sasser” update on Microsoft’s update page.
Use Virus Scanners and Registry Cleaners
It should be understood that you shouldn’t browse the internet without properly installed antivirus programs and firewalls.
That being said, Check C:\Windows\debug for a file called DCPROMO.TXT.
Force your antivirus program to scan this file. If it comes up as an MSO exploit, delete it from the drive and restart your PC. Be sure to clean out your internet temp folders as well.
There are a variety of programs and antivirus software to deleting the sasser virus, but that might not be your exact problem. Because lsass is a program that is exploited by many different types of viruses, then it might not necessarily be your specific problem.
If you are still having problems after these steps, then it might be necessary to reinstall Windows. If you reinstall windows into the same directory, then you should be able to keep all your settings, files, and programs.
NOTE: before reformatting or reinstalling Windows, be CERTAIN to back up all your important documents!
