If you are reading this, you have noticed that your Windows XP performance is slow. When you bought your computer it was fast, but now it takes a while to do anything. It’s not your imagination. Computers slow down over time, but you can restore your computer to its faster self with only a little work on your end.

Common Causes of Computer Slow Down

There are several reasons your computer slowed down. Those reasons are fragmented hard drive, infections, or registry errors. Pretty simple when you break it down.

Steps to Fix a Slow Computer

Let’s start out making sure you don’t have any infections. Start your anti-virus and update it, then run a full scan. It can take a while depending on how big and full your hard drive is.

Next we want to run a scan disk and defrag. I’ll walk you through it.

1. Open your start menu
2. Go to Accessories
3. Choose System Tools
4. From the list choose Scan Disk
5. After Scan Disk has run repeat steps 1-3
6. Choose Defrag
7. Leave your computer alone till its done

I suggest going to bed or watching TV while the defrag runs. It can take several hours to run. If you use your computer at all while it runs, it will start over and take that much longer to complete.

If you have done the above steps and your computer is still slow, it’s time to look at registry errors being the culprit of your slow down.

What is the Registry?

The registry is the core programming code of your Windows operating system. So if there are errors in the registry, you will see your computer respond in strange ways or respond slowly. Registry errors can be anything from a file link that points to nothing to corrupt files.

Fixing registry errors used to be a time consuming process that was risky to undertake as any mistakes could cause your computer to become nothing more than an expensive paperweight. That has changed.
