How to Fix Your XP Runonce Errors

Posted by Kat

Of all the errors you can get, the most confusing can be the XP runonce errors. What on Earth can a runonce error be, and shouldn’t it be two words run once? I plan to not only answer these questions, but also propose solutions you can do to fix the XP runonce errors.

What is XP Runonce?

I call it XP runonce because that is where you find it. It is a registry key in your operating system. Your registry is the core programming language of your Windows XP. So any errors there can possibly have far-reaching effects.

What the runonce registry key does is allow multiple entries to exist without overwriting one another. The programs will run sequentially with explorer (not Internet Explorer, but Windows explorer) waiting till each one has exited before starting the next. It is a part of your system start up, the loading of programs that always start when you start your computer.

Steps to Fix the XP Runonce

One of the things you can do to try and fix XP runonce errors is a system restore. What a system restore does is return your registry to that of an earlier date. Your Windows automatically creates restore points about once every 90 days. To do a system restore, you just:

  • Go to the Start menu on the lower left of your desktop
  • Choose All Programs
  • Go to Accessories
  • Choose System Tools
  • Click on System Restore
  • Select “Restore my computer to an earlier time,” then click Next
  • Select the restore point you want to use based on the date and description, then click Next
  • On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page verify the settings you have chosen. If everything is in order click Next

Be warned that if you installed any programs between the system restore point and now you may have to reinstall those programs.

If system restore doesn’t work, then it is time to look at a registry cleaner. Registry cleaners are a new kind of program on the market that specialize in fixing registry errors. Anything from corrupt registry files to empty registry keys.

To learn more about registry cleaners and fix your XP runonce errors, check out this registry cleaner.  It runs faster and more thoroughly than any other one we’ve found on the market.
