You could be having all kinds of errors, hanging, program crashes, system crashes, and/or slow computer. These errors are frustrating, but they don’t have to ruin your computer time. I’m going to walk you through how to repair Windows XP.

First Steps to a Clean Computer

The first thing we need to do is make sure you have a clean computer. That means that you don’t have any virus infections, as they can cause all the problems I listed. Start your anti-virus program and update it as many times as it will let you. Then run a full scan on all of your hard drives.

Next Steps to Basic Computer Maintenance

Now it is time to do basic maintenance. We’re going to do a Scan Disk and Disk Defragmenter. What this does is check your hard drive for bad spots, then organize all the files on your computer as if it were a giant filing cabinet.

Do this because when files are saved or programs installed, they are not put all together.  Rather, they are scattered about. This can cause problems when your computer is trying to access the information.

• Go to your Start menu
• Choose  Accessories
• Choose System Tools
• In XP you will have to select Scan Disk
• Follow steps 1-3 again and select Disk Defragmenter.
• Now you need to let Disk Defragmenter run without your using the computer at all. I suggest going to bed and letting Disk Defragmenter run while you sleep as it can take several hours if you haven’t done this before or in a while. If you use your computer at all while Disk Defragmenter is trying to run it will restart repeatedly as you use your computer.

Now that we have done the basics, are you still having the problem? If so then you have registry errors.

Registry Errors 101

Registry errors are any errors in the core programming code of your Windows operating system. These errors can range from corrupt or missing files, to empty registry keys, to links to programs that are no longer on your computer. The effects of these errors are far-reaching and very disruptive to your activities.

To fix registry errors, I suggest using a good registry cleaner.
