Now that we know your computer is free of virus infection, we’re going to do a system restore. Basically what a system restore does is restore your registry to how it was at a previous date, before you started having the Internet Explorer problems. Any programs you installed between the date you pick and today will have to be re-installed.

For Windows Vista:

• Restart your computer pressing F8 as it boots up. You should get a black and white menu, if you go into Windows you will have to try again.
• The black and white menu should have Safe Mode listed. Use your arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then press Enter.
• Go to your Start menu
• In the search box at the bottom of the menu type in “restore”
• You will see System Restore as an option. Choose that option.
• You want to choose another restore point
• Look over the available restore points and pick a restore point before you started getting the Internet Explorer errors.

The first step to fix runtime errors is to realize that this kind of error can be caused by several different sources. However, you’ll want to check for some specific known causes.

Also, you’ll want to do some general maintenance and repairs with a registry cleaner and a virus scanner to cover all your bases and generally get your computer running in top form.

Google Add-on Toolbar

This little feature is a major known cause for runtime errors. I won’t go into the finer details (you might have a faulty update, certain incarnations are more problematic than others, etc.)

Basically, you’ll want to disable this feature by opening up your Internet Explorer browser and following these steps:

• Click on the Tools tab
• Go to Internet Options
• Manage Add-ons
• Disable the Google Toolbar

While we’re at it, go ahead and disable all your add-ons. You can bring them back up one by one to see which one might be causing your runtime error.

In fact, you should probably just uninstall your Google add-on. You should be able to do this in your add-on menu, but, if you can’t, go to your Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.

C.    Check your Active Scripting, Java, and ActiveX Settings.

All web browsers require that you enable certain features to display scripts. If active scripting, ActiveX, or Java have been disabled, your browser won’t properly read and run scripts. As a result, JavaScript errors will pop up everywhere. Here’s how to check your scripting settings:

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click the Tools menu.
3. Select Internet Options.
4. The Internet Options dialog box will open. Click the Security tab.
5. Select Default Level.
6. Click OK.

If you have set the Security level to High, then ActiveX and Java will be automatically disabled. Once you have reset the Security level to custom, you should close your browser, reopen it, and test the webpage that was causing problems.

D.    Clean the Registry

These errors can persist, even if you troubleshoot them using the methods listed above. If you haven’t already run a registry cleaner, it’s imperative that you install one.
