How to Use a Disk Defragmenter

Posted by Kat

A disk defragmenter is a utility included in all Microsoft Windows PC systems.  It is a program that rearranges files stored on hard and removable disks in a contiguous, organized fashion.  It relocates fragmented file parts to alternate storage spaces so that they are whole and eliminates free space blocks within the contiguous stored files.

This process increases file access speed by optimizing the time it takes your PC to read and write files on the disk and minimizing the data transfer rate.  Windows systems of XP and newer also utilize the disk defragmenter to improve system startup times.

To use the disk defragmenter:

  • Click on My Computer on your desktop or Start menu.
  • In the My Computer window, right click on the hard drive you want to defragment.  The local (often labeled C:) drive is the default hard drive that holds all of the system files and information on your computer.
  • Click on the drive and select the Properties option.
  • In the Disk Properties window, select the Tools tab and under the Defragmentation option, select the Defragment Now button.
  • In the Disk Defragmenter window, select the Defragment option.

The process starts by analyzing the file configuration inside the hard drive, then continues by compacting contiguous files and relocating fragmented files to the unoccupied space on the drive and defragmenting them.

It is suggested that while utilizing your disk defragmenter, all other programs are closed and you leave your computer idle.  Since the process can take up to several hours on a computer that has not been fragmented recently, it is also suggested to let the defragmenter run overnight.

In addition to defragmenting your PC’s hard drives biweekly or monthly, download a good registry cleaner to eliminate registry errors on your computer’s system.  This ensures that your computer’s system and hard drives are clean and running smoothly and error-free, optimizing computer performance and increasing computer speed.  Maintain your computer with a  defragmenter and registry cleaner to keep it running like new.
