It may pop up as soon as you start your computer, or it may pop up when you try to use certain programs. Either way, error code 2 is a pain. I’m going to walk you through what the error code2 usually means and how to fix it.

Causes of Error Code 2

Error code 2 is usually a driver error. Drivers are the little bits of programming that makes your hardware work with your Windows. When error code 2 is not a driver error, it is still a Windows error, specifically a registry error. Registry errors are any errors in the core programming code of your Windows operating system. Registry errors can be corrupt or missing files, empty registry keys, ActiveX, or even links to programs that are no longer on your computer.

Fixing Error Code 2

Since error code 2 is usually a driver error, we will proceed with uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers. This is easier than it sounds. We will uninstall the drivers, then Windows will detect the hardware again and install the drivers for it.

In Windows XP:

1. Go to your Start menu.
2. Click Control Panel.
3. If Control Panel is in Category view, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System. If Control Panel is in Classic view, double-click System.
4. Click the Hardware tab
5. Click Device Manager. You will see a tree with your various hardware listed.
6. Click the driver with a question mark(?) next to it.
7. On the Action menu, click Uninstall. You will be prompted to confirm the removal. Click OK.
8. Repeat steps 6-7 for any other drivers w/ question marks.
9. On the Action menu, click Scan for hardware changes
10. Reboot your computer.

The drivers should be reinstalled now.
