Outlook Express is a common e-mail and news client made by Microsoft that comes standard in most pre-Windows Vista PCs.  Though generally reliable in sending and receiving emails, Outlook is often prone to numerous problems in which the database can be corrupted.  To fix and prevent corruption, software and repair tools are available for Outlook repair.

Increase in Database Size

Corruption occurs most often when the database is increased in size due to an increased number of emails stored.  The standard Outlook database size is 2Gb, and any increase in size over this mark tends to corrupt remaining files.

1.    To successfully manage database size and prevent database expansion and file corruption, frequent sorting and exporting of files is recommended.

2.    Keeping the database and inbox as neat and tidy as possible and eliminating bulk files by either deleting or exporting files will prevent the database from expanding and prevent you from losing valuable files.

Corruption during Upgrade

When updating Outlook Express or Windows, files are often corrupted due to a change in file type or storage location.

3.    To prevent this from happening, files should be backed up prior to upgrading.  Another option is to remove all of the files to the recycling bin until updating is complete and then replacing the files in the original location.

Also, renaming all of the PST files temporarily to something other then Filename.pst (ie. changing it to Filename.doc or Filename.htm) and then changing them back to PST after updating prevents them from being corrupted.

If you are a Windows user looking to optimize your computer system, you may need to fix Outlook.  And unlike many system problems, it does not always require technical expertise to do the job.  To begin with, Microsoft Outlook is the program used by Windows to send and receive emails.  Not every Windows user relies on Outlook to manage their emails, but those who do need to ensure that it is working properly.

More than anything else, people experiencing problems with Outlook report having difficulty opening Outlook.  Of course this makes for a big problem – not being able to access your emails can be extremely inconvenient at the very least.  Fortunately, despite this being a tremendous problem, the solution is generally pretty simple.

Outlook express has all kinds of registry entries that store passwords and configuration data, but making changes to accounts can cause the program to leave registry entries that need to be removed.  These entries are easy enough to remove if you have a registry cleaner program like Regcure, a program which will help you clean up the problem in a snap.

I had a similar problem happen when I decided to stop using outlook express and go with the full version of Outlook that comes with Microsoft Office Suite.  After removing outlook express and installing Microsoft Office I realized that there were several registry entries that had been left behind.  Now I did not know at first that there were redundant registry entries on my PC, I just noticed that my computer was running real slow.

A serious slow down on a computer can sometimes be the result of registry issues, but not always.  At first I thought that the problem was just the added memory that Microsoft Office needed to run, but then I learned that there was not that much of a difference in RAM usage between Outlook Express and regular Outlook.  That is when I noticed that redundant registry entries were a bigger part of what was slowing my computer.
