So you have found that your Windows XP runs slow? You probably didn’t notice it as it slowed down. Then one day you just realized that your computer is slow. It happens to the best of us. The good news is there are steps you can take to speed up your XP again.
Some Causes of Computer Slow Down
There are really only a few reasons that your computer would slow down. These causes are a fragmented file system, infection, and registry errors.
Steps You Can Take
The first step should be to make sure you are not infected with a virus. Make sure your anti-virus software is updated and do a full scan. If nothing comes up, then it’s time to do a scan disk and defrag. I would suggest doing them right as you get off your computer for the night and leave it to run over night.
- Go to your Start menu
- Select Accessories
- Choose System Tools from that menu
- Select Scan Disk, and let it run
- Once Scan Disk is done repeat steps 1-3
- Select Defrag from the menu and let it run over night
Defrag can take hours and if you are on your computer at all while it tries to run it will constantly restart getting nothing done and slowing your computer down even more while you try to use it and run defrag. This is why I suggest you let it run over \night while you are asleep.
If your computer is still slow after making sure there is no infection and the scan disk and defrag have run, that leaves registry errors as the culprit of your slow computer.
What is a Registry Error?
To answer this question fully, I have to tell you what the registry is, which is simple. The registry is the core programming language of your Windows XP. Errors in the registry can be as simple as a file link that points to a file that doesn’t exist anymore. Other registry errors are corrupt files and empty registry keys.
There is a new kind of program on the market written to address registry errors called a registry cleaner. To learn more and speed up your Windows XP visit this site for the most up-to-date information and maintenance.
